Poverty is responsible for the deaths of more than six million children before their fifth birthdays, and a child under 15 dies every five seconds around the world.
The World Bank’s definition of people living in poverty is those living on less than US$1.90 a day, due to poverty they do not have access to services and essential goods.
A paper released by the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research projects that if consumption contracts in developing countries by 20 per cent, it could see an increase in poverty for 400 to 600 million people globally.
The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global economy could see as many as 580 million people — 8 percent of the world's population — pushed into poverty, according to researchers. COVID 19 affects severely poor people mostly who are daily earners, living in crowded housing, lack the resources to stay home and to live.
